Each square is one day. The brighter the square, the more stories we published on that topic that day.

Five things that mattered

The story with the most sources from each topic.

  1. Agents & Apps

US launches America.gov, an AI chatbot for public services

The US government opened a website called America.gov with an AI chatbot.

Why it matters: One front door could save people from searching dozens of agency sites. For now it is mostly a guide that sends people on to other websites. The order sets a policy that its AI be “accurate, reliable, and transparent”, but does not say how that will be checked.

Anthropic’s Sonnet 5.5 nears Opus at half the token price

Anthropic released a new AI model called Claude Sonnet 5.5.

Why it matters: A model close to Opus at half the per-token price could cut the cost of everyday AI work. But the bill also depends on how many tokens a task uses. At the top effort setting, the independent test found a higher cost per task than Sonnet 5, the opposite of the saving Anthropic describes for most work.

  3. Safety & Security

OpenAI safety report lead quits, calling its culture broken

The person who led OpenAI’s safety reports has quit the company.

Why it matters: It is the fourth safety-related exit at OpenAI in a few days, after the company cut ties with three researchers. The criticism comes from someone who wrote OpenAI’s own safety reports. The essay is one person’s view, and OpenAI disputes the picture in general terms.

  4. Robotics

US Army sets up a command to field autonomous systems

The US Army is creating a new command for drones and robot systems.

Why it matters: The US military is reorganising around drones, robot vehicles and other autonomous systems, with a deadline. The memo lists autonomous fires, combat vehicles and reconnaissance among the priorities. No leader, size or start date for the command has been made public.

  5. Chips & Infrastructure

Amazon pledges $1 billion more to its data centre towns

Amazon will spend more than $1 billion extra in towns with its data centres.

Why it matters: Local opposition is now one of the biggest obstacles to building AI data centres, and Amazon is answering it with money and openness. The benefits it lists are its own targets. Whether the energy promise keeps household bills from rising depends on utilities and regulators.
