Each square is one day. The brighter the square, the more stories we published on that topic that day.

Five things that mattered

One prompt could take over AWS AI agents, researchers say

Researchers asked a public AI agent on AWS for its cloud keys, and it gave them.

Why it matters: Companies give AI agents keys to their cloud systems. This case shows how a single message from a stranger can turn one public agent into a way in. AWS and the researchers disagree on whether it was a flaw or a setup choice that customers control.

Yandex says drones shut a third data centre in four days

Drones hit three Yandex data centres between October 8 and October 11.

Why it matters: Data centres that train and run AI have become targets in the war. Yandex runs YandexGPT, one of Russia’s leading AI models, and its cloud serves many Russian companies. Its customers have now been told to plan for other places to run their systems.

Microsoft launches Decision-1, a fast model for AI choices

Microsoft released a small model that picks answers from a fixed list.

Why it matters: AI agents make many small choices: which tool to call, whether a step is safe, which answer is best. Decision models make those choices quickly and cheaply. Microsoft is the latest big company to copy TypeSafe’s Jev, and it chose a Chinese open model as the base.

Google’s Playground turns text prompts into games

Google’s Playground lets people make games by describing them in words.

Why it matters: Making a game used to need code and art skills; now a sentence can be enough to start one. That brings Google closer to game platforms such as Roblox, whose shares fell before trading opened, TNW reports. Google calls Playground an early experiment.

Tesla renames Full Self-Driving in Europe after German push

Tesla’s driving help is now called Tesla Assisted Driving in Europe.

Why it matters: Tesla’s driving system uses AI trained on camera images, but the driver must still watch the road and stays responsible. A clearer name may help it win EU approval. The EU committee that decides has set no vote yet, and December is the earliest date.

Words of the week

The words our stories explained most this week.

AI agent
An AI that takes actions on its own to reach a goal, not only answers questions.
Token
A small piece of text, often part of a word, that AI models read and are paid by.
Open source
Software whose code anyone may read, use and change, under a licence.
