The lessons

  1. How are AI laws built? Bans, high risk and labels

AI laws mostly use four tools. They ban a few uses, set strict duties for risky uses, ask for labels that show when AI is involved, and give duties to makers of powerful models.

  2. AI at work: what do hiring and monitoring rules say?

Many places now have rules for AI at work. Employers often must tell people when AI judges them, check AI tools for unfair results, and keep a human involved in big decisions such as firing.

  3. Deepfakes and AI-made content: what must be labelled?

Rules on AI-made content act in four places. Labels show people when AI made something, and hidden marks go inside the file. Platforms must remove sexual deepfakes fast, and sharing them is a crime in many places.

  4. Chatbots, companions and children: what do the rules say?

Chatbots must often say that they are AI. Companion chatbots, which act like a friend or partner, must also help users in a crisis, and new laws add extra protection for children.

  5. Which AI rules apply to you?

It depends on three things: where you are, what you use AI for, and whether you build the AI tool or use it. Rules from bigger places add up, so a business in New York City follows city, state and US federal rules.

After this course you can

  • Name the four kinds of AI rules, and explain how the EU’s one big law differs from the US mix of laws.
  • Explain what AI rules ask employers to do at each stage of a job, from hiring to layoffs.
  • Tell visible labels from hidden marks, say who must act on AI-made content, and explain how US law gets sexual deepfakes removed.
  • Describe what chatbots must tell users, what companion chatbots must do in a crisis, and how new laws protect children.
  • Find the AI rules that apply to you by asking where you are, what you use AI for, and what your role is.
