Tesla has sold its driver-assistance system as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”. In Europe, the system is only approved in a few countries, and Tesla wants approval across the whole EU.
Why the name changed
Germany’s transport ministry wrote on October 6 that the system does not take over the whole job of driving. It helps with speeding up, braking and steering, and the driver stays fully responsible.
The ministry said the current name was “somewhat misleading”, and that Tesla had offered a new one: Tesla Assisted Driving. Electrek reports that Tesla’s German website now uses it, and TechCrunch reports the change across Europe.
In the US, the system keeps its old name, Electrek reports. Tesla has made no statement, but Elon Musk thanked Germany on X, Reuters reports.
Steps from the German ministry’s statement and reports by Reuters, TechCrunch and Electrek; no EU vote date is set.
What Germany will support
Transport Minister Steffen Bilger says he wants Tesla drivers to use the system across the EU as soon as possible. Germany and Tesla agreed that it may drive at most 10% above the speed limit.
The Dutch vehicle authority, RDW, approved the system in April 2026 and asked the EU to allow it everywhere. Reuters reports that Sweden and France have concerns about speeding.
When the EU could decide
An EU committee of national experts decides on such approvals. Its meeting on October 6 only continued the talks, and its next meeting, in December, is the earliest chance for a vote.
Approval needs a qualified majority: at least 15 of the 27 countries, with 65% of the EU’s people. No exact date has been set.

The reasons and the speed limit come from the German ministry’s own statement. Tesla has not commented, so the extent of the rename rests on what outlets saw on its websites.
