New to this? Read it in simple words
- Apple’s new MacBook Pro is the first Mac with a touchscreen.
- It starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch model.
- It reaches stores on November 6.
- Apple says it can run big AI models on the laptop, but nobody has tested this yet.
- OLED
- A screen where each tiny dot makes its own light, which gives deep blacks and bright colours.
- Dynamic Island
- An area at the top of the screen that shows live alerts and activities, first used on the iPhone.
- On-device AI
- AI that runs on your own device instead of on a company’s servers.
A day after its M6 laptops, Apple showed a second MacBook Pro. This one changes how people use a Mac: with their fingers on the screen.
What is new
The new MacBook Pro comes in two sizes, with a 14.2-inch or 16.3-inch tandem OLED screen that refreshes 120 times a second. Users can touch the screen as well as use the keyboard and trackpad.
The top of the screen has the Dynamic Island, the area that shows live alerts on the iPhone. Ars Technica’s hands-on test and MacRumors also show a glowing Apple logo on the lid, though Apple’s release does not mention it.
Apple says the screen reaches 2,000 nits at its brightest, and that the 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch model 4 pounds. Battery life is up to 24 hours, by Apple’s own tests.

Prices and chips
With the M5 Pro chip, the 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch model at $3,399 in the US. With the M5 Max chip, they start at $4,499 and $4,799, Apple says. Both sizes can have up to 128GB of memory.
Orders opened on October 28 in 30 countries. The laptops reach customers and stores on Friday, November 6.
The new models use M5 chips, not the newer M6 that Apple put into a cheaper 14-inch MacBook Pro a day earlier. That model starts at $1,999.
AI on the laptop
Apple says every GPU core in the M5 chips has a Neural Accelerator for AI work. It says the M5 Max can run “LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on device.” Apple gives no speed figures, and no independent test has checked this yet.
The laptops come with Siri AI, still in beta in macOS 27.2, which can appear in the Dynamic Island. Apple’s release does not say which of its AI features run on the laptop and which use its servers.
“The Mac is first and foremost an indirect input device, built around the trackpad and keyboard. But I think there’s times when it’s comfortable and handy to have touch,” Apple’s John Ternus told Wired.
