Apple’s own servers for AI requests too big for the device. Apple says it keeps none of the data.

Apple brought its new Siri AI to iPhones this year. On October 13, at an event in New York, it showed the devices that are meant to carry Siri AI into the living room.

A screen for the home

HomeView is a smart display with a 7-inch screen and Apple’s A18 chip. It comes in two versions, one for a table and one for the wall, and both cost $299.

Pre-orders opened on October 13, and HomeView arrives on November 13 in eight countries. They are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.

HomeView can recognise the faces of up to six people and show each person their own home screen. Wall mounts are made by Schneider Electric’s home brand.

Apple’s dates and US prices from its October 13 announcements; Siri AI is a beta in English in eight countries.

Siri AI, step by step

On HomeView and the new Apple TV, Siri AI is a beta, a test version. It works only in English and only in the same eight countries, Apple’s own notes say.

Apple says Siri requests run on the device or on its Private Cloud Compute servers, and that the data is not stored or made accessible to Apple. Some personal requests need a paired iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s notes also say that some AI features have daily limits, and that more use “will be available for a fee in the future”.

The new HomePod mini costs $149 and ships on October 30. It will get Siri AI only “via a future software update”, and Apple gives no date.

A pricier Apple TV, and no HomeView in the EU

The new Apple TV 4K has an A19 chip and built-in microphones, so people can talk to Siri AI without the remote. It comes in one version, with 128GB of storage, for $299, more than earlier models. It also arrives on November 13.

HomeView is “not available for sale in the European Union”, Apple says, because Siri AI is not yet available on iPhones there. Apple says it is “working constructively with the EU”.

Apple will also sell cameras, a door lock, thermostats and sensors made by LG and Schneider Electric. They come from December, at first in the United States and Canada.
