Each square is one day. The brighter the square, the more stories we published on that topic that day.

Five things that mattered

The story with the most sources from each topic.

  1. Chips & Infrastructure

Amazon ordered billions in backup generators

A Generac filing in September named Amazon as the customer in a long-term generator deal. Amazon also got the right to buy Generac shares.

Why it matters: Backup power protects online services, but buyers should publish fuel use, emissions, test hours, outage performance, and cleaner options for each site.

  2. Safety & Security

OpenAI disclosed six cases of worrying model behaviour

On September 16, OpenAI published six reports about AI models acting in worrying ways. It also set up a process for future reports.

Why it matters: AI incident reports help only when they arrive quickly, describe outside harm, name what remains unknown, and lead to checks by independent experts.

  3. Policy & Law

US House says huge data centres should pay their grid costs

Late on September 16, the US House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act. The vote was 417 to 3.

Why it matters: The bill can guide states, but customer protection will depend on clear cost studies, public hearings, enforceable contracts, and action by the Senate.

  4. Agents & Apps

Cohesity wants backups for AI agents, not just their data

On September 16, Cohesity introduced Agent Resilience, a backup tool for AI agents.

Why it matters: Monitoring can show that an agent failed. A useful recovery plan must also restore the agent and repair the data it changed.

  5. Robotics

Europe has a new AI and robotics pipeline

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology expanded its AI programme on September 16. It is now called the EIT AI and Robotics Community.

Why it matters: Europe needs more than strong robotics research: teams need test sites, customers, patient funding, and clear safety evidence.
