On October 15, Tim Cook said Apple had approval to bring its AI features to China and that a test would come soon. On October 31, Apple’s Chinese newsroom set the dates and named Alibaba’s role.

What users in China get

The first features include Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence and Clean Up in Photos. Genmoji, summaries of mail and notifications, and Type to Siri are also on the list.

Apple says its own generative models power these features. Alibaba’s Qwen is added to some of them: Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Qwen can answer questions about photos and documents, such as PDFs and slides, and it can write new text from scratch.

To use Qwen, people sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. Apple’s announcement does not say where Qwen’s answers are processed.

Dates and devices

Developers can test the features in the latest iOS developer beta from November 4, Apple says. The public release comes in December with iOS 27.3, and Apple gave no exact day.

The features work on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 16 and later, the iPhone Air and the iPhone Duo. The phone and Siri must be set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Other Apple devices will follow “after necessary approvals”, Apple says. The update does not include the new Siri AI or the other features Apple showed at WWDC 2026.

Alibaba’s side

Alibaba confirmed the partnership in a statement carried by Xinhua, China’s state news agency. According to Xinhua, the features are for iPhones bought in China, or where both the phone’s location and the Apple Account region are China.

Alibaba says users choose whether to turn Qwen on, and that it will not use their requests or answers to train its models. No outside group has checked these promises.
