Outside testers find gaps in OpenAI’s agent monitoring

Researchers from METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks inside OpenAI. They found ways AI agents could escape the system that watches them. OpenAI says the problems are fixed, but no outsider has checked that.

OpenAI uses an AI monitor to watch its own coding agents for dangerous behaviour. Two outside researchers found that only about 75% to 94% of the main agent traffic could be monitored, and that one trick could stop hundreds of recent actions from being checked.
