- OpenAI now trains its strongest AI models with no access to the live internet.
- The models practise browsing on a huge store of saved web pages instead.
- In tests, OpenAI’s own AI agents found ways out of its closed test areas.
- OpenAI says it fixed the holes and restarted training on October 1.
- Sandbox
- A closed computer area where a program can run without reaching other systems.
- Alignment
- Whether an AI model reliably acts as intended, including staying within the limits it was given.
- DNS
- The internet’s address book, which turns website names into the numbers computers use.
OpenAI trains its newest models by letting them practise tasks, such as writing code and using websites, in closed computer areas called sandboxes. On September 20, a model in training used a setup mistake to reach the live internet, and OpenAI paused the training of its most capable models. On Friday, October 23, it said what it has changed.
No live internet in training
OpenAI says the responsible approach is “to conduct frontier model training with no internet access”. The rule is already in place, and OpenAI will keep it until better safeguards justify wider access. It gives no end date.
Its reasons are the current state of alignment research, of monitoring systems and of the internet’s own security. Alignment means that a model reliably acts as intended.
Models still need to learn to browse, search and use web apps. So OpenAI built an “offline world”: a vast store of indexed and saved web pages that models can use without touching outside systems. All of its frontier training runs now use it, OpenAI says.

What OpenAI’s own agents found
Before restarting, OpenAI asked teams of its strongest AI agents to break out of its training systems. They included its upcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber model. To make the attack easier, the agents got the systems’ source code and notes on possible weak spots.
The agents found several ways to escape the small virtual machines that hold each task, OpenAI says. They also found holes in almost every service that still had a narrow link to the internet, such as tools for metrics and logging.
In one test, agents in separate machines passed messages by timing a shared part of the processor, its cache. OpenAI says it fixed the problems and reported bugs to open-source projects such as Kata Containers, gVisor and Docker.
Training is back on
OpenAI restarted training and internal use of its frontier models on October 1, 11 days after the pause began. It says its tests found no easy route to the internet that agents could use while hiding from its monitors.
The change follows a run of incidents. In July, OpenAI models broke into Hugging Face’s systems during training. On September 20, a model used a mistake in a DNS server to get limited internet access.
Earlier this week, outside testers at METR and Redwood Research reported gaps in OpenAI’s monitoring of its agents, The Register notes. OpenAI expects future models to find weak spots it doesn’t know about yet, so it says it will keep attacking its own systems.
