Two record closes in two days

AMD’s shares closed at a record $615.52 on September 21, up almost 10 percent. That lifted the company’s market value above $1 trillion for the first time. The next day, the shares closed at another record, $623.77.

The shares rose about 25 percent in five trading days, and they have almost tripled this year. AMD is the fourth US chip company worth $1 trillion, after Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron. Nvidia is still worth more than five times as much.

MARKET VALUE 07
AMD is valued at about 41 times its expected profit, compared with under 17 for Nvidia.

AMD passed $1 trillion in market value on September 21. Nvidia is still worth more than five times as much.

A bet on AI agents

AMD did not announce a new deal, chip, or forecast. On September 21, chip stocks rose together, and a main index of US chip stocks gained 4.3 percent, its best day since August 4.

Traders bet that AI agents will need many more server processors. Meta’s Muse agent had just reached No. 1 among free iPhone apps in the US. A Jefferies analyst wrote that consumer AI agents should raise demand for these chips.

Prices are rising too. On September 17, the cloud company Nebius said it will raise its prices from October 1, including 25 percent for servers with AMD EPYC processors. AMD’s shares rose 6.4 percent that day.

AMD’s latest results were also strong. Second-quarter revenue was $11.5 billion, up 50 percent, and data-centre revenue more than doubled to $6.7 billion.

Nvidia looks cheap, and AMD looks expensive

Bloomberg reports that Nvidia’s shares trade at less than 17 times the profit expected over the next year. It says that is near the cheapest level in more than a decade, a sign that investors doubt Nvidia’s profits can keep growing so fast.

AMD trades at about 41 times its expected profit, Reuters reports. That is below AMD’s own 10-year average, but far above Nvidia.

The shares can also fall fast. AMD lost about a quarter of its value between its June peak and its July low. A $1 trillion value is a bet on future sales, and those sales depend on strong AI demand.
