Words to know
Generative AI
AI that creates new text, pictures, sound or music from a request.
Distributor
A company that delivers an artist’s music to streaming services such as YouTube Music.
Disclosure
Telling people openly how something was made.

Generative AI can now write and sing whole songs. On October 14, YouTube Music started marking the songs that were made mainly this way.

What listeners see

“Starting today, YouTube Music is rolling out labels to make it easier to see when a song was created primarily using generative AI,” YouTube wrote. Its example is a song whose composition and vocals came from a generative model.

The label sits on the player page, for tracks “where AI played a significant role”. The badge reads “AI”, 9to5Google and Engadget report. Tapping it opens a menu with more information.

The labels will also come to the main YouTube app, YouTube says. It has not given a date.

Explainer
How a song gets YouTube Music’s AI label, and what is still unclear.

YouTube’s own pages of October 14; how its detection tools work is not explained.

Who decides

YouTube says it is “teaming up with music partners and using our own detection tools” to find AI tracks. It has not explained how its detection works.

Its help page asks record labels and distributors to mark each track as “Fully Gen AI”, “Partly Gen AI” or “No Gen AI”. AI-made vocals, instruments, lyrics or melodies count. Pitch correction and automatic mastering do not.

Without a declaration, YouTube may mark a track itself, using other signals. It is not yet clear whether songs marked “Partly Gen AI” also get the label on the player.

Other music services

Spotify said in September 2025 that it would show AI use in song credits, based on what labels and distributors declare, TechCrunch reported.

Apple Music plans to label AI-made tracks too, Variety reported in August, citing a note Apple sent to music partners. Apple has not announced a date.
