In brief

Nvidia announced a 64GB version of its DGX Spark desktop AI computer on October 2. Systems from Acer, ASUS, Dell, Gigabyte, HP and MSI start at $4,999 and go on sale on October 23. Nvidia says one unit runs models of up to 100 billion parameters.

New to this? Read it in simple words
  • Nvidia made a new DGX Spark desktop AI computer with less memory.
  • It has 64GB of memory and starts at $4,999.
  • Six PC makers sell it from October 23.
  • Memory is very expensive now, so less memory keeps the price lower.
Words to know
Unified memory
Memory that the main processor and the graphics chip share.
Parameters
The numbers inside an AI model; more usually means a bigger model.
Local AI

What Nvidia announced

The new version has 64GB of unified memory instead of 128GB. Systems start at $4,999 and are available from Friday, October 23, Nvidia’s blog says.

They are sold only by partners: Acer, ASUS, Dell, Gigabyte, HP and MSI. Tom’s Hardware says the processor, the 273 GB/s memory bandwidth and the ConnectX-7 network chip are unchanged.

Nvidia says one unit supports models of up to 100 billion parameters, and two linked units up to 200 billion. Those are Nvidia’s figures.

PRICE CHECK 01
Half the memory, not half the price.

From Nvidia’s blog of October 2 and Tom’s Hardware. Street prices are Tom’s Hardware’s estimate.

Why less memory

Tom’s Hardware links the change to the memory shortage. Strong mid-sized models now fit in much less memory, it says, while costly memory raises the entry price.

Nvidia raised the price of its own 128GB Founders Edition from $3,999 to $4,699 in February, citing memory costs, Tom’s Hardware reported then.

The 64GB partner systems start above that list price. Tom’s Hardware estimates 128GB systems cost roughly $7,000 to $9,000 now, when they are in stock.

New software

Nvidia also announced Sync Cluster Assistant, a tool that links several Sparks together. It says two linked 64GB units ran up to 1.7 times faster in its tests.

A Model Launcher feature, due at the end of the month, downloads and starts models across one or more systems, Nvidia says.

The 128GB versions stay on sale, according to Tom’s Hardware and HotHardware.

How we checked this story

We read Nvidia’s blog post and compared Tom’s Hardware and HotHardware, which agree on the price, the date and the partners. The model sizes and the 1.7 times speed-up are Nvidia’s claims. The $7,000 to $9,000 street price is Tom’s Hardware’s estimate. PCMag and TechPowerUp also covered the launch, but blocked our reader.
