Google AI Studio is Google’s website for building things with its AI models. Since May, it can turn a written idea into an Android app. On October 13, Google made it much easier to put that app on a phone.
What is new
Until now, an Android app made in AI Studio had to be installed over a USB cable, with developer tools.
From October 13, people can launch these apps on their own devices through Google Play. They need only a standard Google account and no developer account, Google says. A developer account costs a one-time $25.
The option is for people aged 18 and over, in “select markets, including the U.S.”, Google says. It has not named the other countries.
The path Google described on October 13; the apps stay private to the person who made them.
Private, for now
The apps are kept “separate from the public store catalog”, Google says, so other people can’t find them in Google Play. 9to5Google and Engadget say they appear in a new “personal library” section.
Google plans to let people share their apps with a small circle of friends and family “in the coming months”. It gave no date.
People who want to reach more users can move to a professional developer account. Their apps then go through the same safety reviews as other apps in the store.
What Google has not said
Google has not said whether the new option has costs or limits. It also does not name the AI model that builds the apps, and the reports describe the tools differently.
No outside test has looked at the quality or the safety of these apps yet.
