In brief

Google has updated its Gemini help pages: from October 9, people using the Gemini app without a Google AI plan will be able to pick only the Flash-Lite model. Subscribers to AI Plus keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro, on a date Google will send them by email.

Who gets what

Google’s help page now lists model access after the change. Without a plan: Flash-Lite only. AI Plus: Flash-Lite and Flash. AI Pro and AI Ultra: all three.

“These changes will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th,” the page says. AI Plus subscribers “should receive an email” with their own date.

AI Pro subscribers also gain Deep Think, which 9to5Google says was limited to the top plans until now.

Limits and effort levels

Each model will offer low, medium and high effort. Higher effort gives “more thorough answers” but uses more of your limit, Google says.

Usage limits are based on computing use and refresh every 5 hours until a weekly cap. Google says AI Plus gets twice the standard limit and AI Pro four times.

The page also lists earlier changes to limits and models, on May 17 for adults and July 24 for users under 18.

What it means

Free users lose both Flash and Pro, and AI Plus users pay the same price for less, 9to5Google and Android Headlines report. 9to5Google lists AI Plus at $4.99 a month and AI Pro at $19.99.

Android Headlines calls the move a clear nudge toward the higher plans. Google has not explained the change publicly.

The page does not say which countries are affected. It does not say where Google’s new Gemini 4 Argon model fits, 9to5Google notes.

How we checked this story

We read Google’s help page directly; its table uses icons, so we matched it with the tables in 9to5Google and Android Headlines, which agree. Some early summaries said AI Plus users would get specific Flash versions on October 9; Google’s page names no versions and gives AI Plus users their own date, so we follow Google.
