Android and Alexa+

The tablets run Android with the full Google Play Store. “An all-new product line with new hardware and a new OS, rather than a rebrand of Fire Tablets,” an Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Alexa+ is built into every model, with an Ask Alexa button and the wake word. A feature called On-Screen Intelligence lets Alexa+ read what is on the screen. Amazon says it is off by default, and an indicator shows when it is on.

Amazon does not say whether Alexa+ runs on the tablet or in the cloud. Alexa+ is offered in all eight launch countries, but in most of them outside the US and Canada it is still in early access.

First impressions

Amazon says the 12 Pro’s eight-core chip makes it nearly three times faster than its earlier tablets. Engadget and 9to5Google report that the chip is a MediaTek Dimensity 8400. The speed and battery claims have not been tested yet.

Engadget’s reviewer, who tried the 12 Pro, found the aluminium body solid and the software quick. The Nanomatte screen cut glare, but it looked a little less bright in direct sun.

“You could argue that I’m challenging my own Kindle business,” Panos Panay, Amazon’s devices chief, told Engadget.
